INFORMATION ON PALPA MEMBERSHIP
WHO CAN BECOME A MEMBER OF PALPA?
Suomen Palautuspakkaus Oy, hereinafter referred to as “Palpa”, controls the return systems of beverage packages in Finland. Palpa is a non-profit company owned by franchising groups and breweries.
All manufacturers and importers of beverage packages can become members of the return systems of beverage packages administered by Palpa. A separate membership fee is paid for the membership of each return system.
WHAT BENEFITS DO MEMBERS RECEIVE?
Primarily, a beverage packaging tax of EUR 0.51 per litre must be paid for beverage packages. However, manufacturers and importers of beverage packages can be exempted from the beverage packaging tax by joining a deposit-based return system approved by authorities or by organising one themselves.
As a member of Palpa, the manufacturer or importer of beverage packages does not need to pay beverage packaging tax. Membership is often a more cost-effective option than paying the tax or organising a new recycling system. In the return systems of Palpa, the packaging materials are also efficiently recycled and reused.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN MEMBERSHIP?
THE MEMBER
- Is responsible for the deposit and other markings on their beverage packages
- Registers their products in the return system
- Reports the monthly sales to Palpa
PALPA
- Delivers the membership information to the Pirkanmaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for the tax benefit
- Updates the product information in the reverse vending machines
- Collects the members' deposit and recycling fees
- Ensures that the packages are recycled
WHAT DOES IT COST TO BECOME A MEMBER?
There is an individual return system for each package type (glass bottles, plastic bottles and aluminium cans) with a separate membership fee.
In addition, bottle- or can-specific registration, deposit, and recycling fees are paid for the products. The acquired funds are used for return system administration and other operational expenses. Palpa is a non-profit company.
