Palpa's instructions for Horeca

27.04.2026

Sorting of beverage packages

Cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles must be sorted separately and returned in their own transport units. Proper sorting is important so that the material of beverage packages can be recycled.

Sorting instructions

Cans

Sort cans (also non-deposit) as intact and empty to a Palpa manual bag (red print).

Plastic bottles

Sort plastic bottles with Palpa's deposit marking as intact and empty to a Palpa manual bag.

Note! Non-deposit plastic bottles must not be sorted into deposit material, as the recyclability of the material cannot be guaranteed. Due to the recycling of plastic, different types of plastic must not be mixed. In addition, the wrong materials in the packaging can prevent recycling.

Non-deposit plastic bottles can be recycled by returning them to a plastic collection point or as an energy fraction.

Glass bottles

Sort beverage bottles of glass as intact and empty to a glass container.

Note! It is not allowed to put refillable glass bottles to Palpa's glass container. Return them in a crate or on plastic tray to Hartwall.

Impurities prevent recycling

Returns must not contain rubbish or other impurities as they will prevent recycling.

Remember to follow Palpa's sorting and return instructions in all returns.

Recycling fees 1.1.2026 onwards

06.11.2025

The recycling fees for plastic bottles will increase by 15% across all recycling fee categories. The increase is due to a decline in the sales revenue from plastic bottles, as the global market price of recycled PET plastic has decreased.
The recycling fees for cans and glass bottles will remain unchanged.
Palpa reserves the right to make changes.

Use of recycled raw material in PET bottles

02.04.2025

EU legislation has set a requirement for the use of recycled raw material in PET bottles. In 2025, 25% of the material used in PET bottles must be recycled plastic. The percentage is calculated as the average of all bottles placed on the market. This requirement applies to both beverage manufacturers and importers.
For new products, starting from 1.4.2025, the proportion of recycled raw material used in the bottle (preform) must be indicated as a percentage (%) on the product registration form. This information is mandatory.
For previously registered products that remain on sale, information on the use of recycled raw material must be updated later in the spring using a reporting template that will be published on the extranet. The same template can also be used to update the weights of the bottle (preform), closure, and label. It is the responsibility of beverage manufacturers and importers to keep this information up to date.
Palpa reports annually to the Pirkanmaa ELY Centre (the supervisory authority for the return systems) on return rates by return system and the total share of recycled raw material in plastic bottles. The calculation of return rates and the proportion of recycled raw material is based on the total weight of the packaging.

INVOICING CONTACT INFORMATION

Palpa has added a new field (Invoicing inquiries) to the company registration form, where invoicing contact details (email address) must be provided to facilitate the management of invoicing-related matters. Companies that have previously joined the return systems must update this information in the extranet under the Company Information – Update Company Information section.

Recycling fees 1.1.2025 onwards

20.11.2024

The recycling fee for cans will decrease by 50%. Recycling fees for PET bottles will decrease by 20% in all recycling fee categories. The reduction in fees is made possible by the favorable development of global market prices for recycled materials.

Recycling fees for glass bottles will increase by 15% in all recycling fee categories. The increase is caused by the decrease in recycling fee revenues as sales volumes decline, as well as the general rise in costs. Additionally, there have been discrepancies in the reporting of glass bottle sales, independent of Palpa, which may cause upward pressure on recycling fees during 2025.

Palpa reserves the right to make changes.
