Horeca: The deposit refund principles for one way glass bottles, sorting of return packages and the use of Palpa stickers

01.12.2016

The deposit refund principles for one way glass bottles are verified

Palpa has received feedback on refund principles for one way glass bottles that are based in conversion of the size of a container, due to the amount of small bottles has risen. The conversion is now 400 bottles for a big container and 150 bottles for a small one.

Palpa has verified the conversions in October 2016 by comparing the last 12 months reverse vending machine receipts to returned containers. Approximately 80 % of one way glass bottles are returned via reverse vending machines.

Statistics covered 2 400 return locations and 230 000 transported containers. The amount of glass bottles in a big container was 394 bottles and in a small one 156 bottles. Based on these results Palpa will not change the amounts of deposit refunds and will follow up their development regularly.

Returning correctly

The appropriate sorting of return packages is essential for both the reuse of the material and for paying the refunds.

Cans
Use Palpa manual bag for returns. Don´t return other beverage packages in the same bag or have garbage in it.

Plastic bottles
Use Palpa manual bag for returns. Don´t return other beverage packages in the same bag or have garbage in it. NB! Only plastic bottles with Palpa's deposit marking.

Recyclable glass bottles
Return in 240 l plastic container with lid. Other glass material, porcelain, ceramics or garbage is prohibited to return in the container.

Updates to return system rules

29.01.2016

Palpa has prepared updates to return system rules during 2015. The return systems have each started during different decades, and thus updates and harmonizations were considered necessary.

The updated rules are effective from 1 February 2016.

The updated rules are better suited to today’s return system operations. The updates do not cause any major changes in normal operations and no changes in the operational instructions are made.

Issues in rules have been reorganized and presented according to operational chronology, and similar features in the systems have been harmonized in the texts. Many definitions have been specified, new definitions have been added and some terms have been renamed. For example, a Deposit Payer is now called a Member.

Issues belonging to the operational instructions for the return system or official regulations have been removed from the rules. In these cases, the rules refer to instructions available at our website or to official regulations.

We invite you to read our new rules in the Material bank on our website.

Panttiparkki expanding during summer 2015

PALPA has together with the city of Helsinki tested usage of tubes for deposit-based packages on the side of trash bins during late summer of 2014. The experience has been a good one and now the usage of Panttiparkki is going to expand to other cities in Finland.

The tube is mounted on the side of a trash bin and there can anyone put deposit-based beverage packages to be picked up and returned by someone else. This way the cans and bottles have no need to be put amongst the mixed waste or left in nature to litter the environment. The bottom of the tube moves sideways so that it is easy to remove the packages from the tube. Similar solutions are in use elsewhere in Europe.
